It takes place annually in mid-July, when the weather conditions are most extreme and temperatures over 120 °F (49 °C), even in the shade, are not uncommon. Consequently, very few people—even among ultramarathoners—are capable of finishing this grueling race.

This film explores Taiwan’s participation in World War II by delving into the geography, era, and psychology of the time to unravel a historical perspective unique to the people of Taiwan, while also contributing significantly to filling in the gaps in Taiwan’s history. Through firsthand oral accounts of the few surviving Taiwanese who fought for the Imperial Japanese Army, the film presents an authentic portrait of war, as well as the experiences of soldiers who returned from the battlefield to face intense societal changes in Taiwan, from struggling with conflicting identities to the upheaval of the 228 Incident.
